TEAM Rennick Coach's Corner
Building Character
• If you are worried or afraid of anything, something in your mental attitude needs correction. Worry and fear are negative emotions that serve no useful purpose and are not benign influences. Both tend to expand if left unchecked, crowding out positive emotions and beliefs, taking over your mind and filling it with counterproductive emotions that cause you to doubt your ability to succeed at anything you attempt. Unless you control worry and fear, one day you will discover that they control you. While emotions can’t always be corrected with logic or reason, they are always susceptible to action. Act, and even if your actions aren’t entirely appropriate for the situation, the very act of doing something – anything constructive - will have a positive effect on your mind and attitude.
• Dependability is the first foundation stone of good character. People of character do what they say they will do, when they say they will do it, and according to agreed-upon conditions. They are the leaders, the individuals to whom others turn for guidance because they have demonstrated that they care, that they can be trusted. If you respect yourself enough to keep commitments, even when it’s inconvenient to do so, others will come to respect you too. Dependability, like any other character trait, is a habit. Begin today – at the beginning of a new month – to develop the dependability habit.
If you procrastinate or find it difficult to meet your commitments, start small. Promise yourself that you will be on time for example, and manage your time so that you are on time. If you commit to certain other obligations, then make those happen as well. Soon you will find it’s easier to keep many of your commitments.
• When you get yourself under complete control, you can be your own boss. We all have moments when
we allow others to cause us to react emotionally, especially in anger. Often we regret our response later, and we vow we will never allow ourselves to behave in this fashion again. The next time you feel the anger rising, remind yourself that no one can make you angry or emotional without your consent – indeed your active participation is required. Those who have learned to manage themselves are the individuals who are destined to be leaders. They are chosen to manage others because they have demonstrated that they can manage themselves. They are people of character.
Effective Management
• Henry Ford is reported to have offered $25,000 to anyone who would show him how to save a single nut and bolt on each automobile he made. Without Henry Ford, our country would not be the America we know today. His obsession with reducing costs and improving productivity allowed him to build the first automobile that ordinary people could afford and led to the construction of a vast network of roads and highways that gave birth to today’s mobile society. It also set the stage for total quality management and continuous improvement programs that are prevalent in the automotive industry today. We would all be well advised to take a page from the lessons that the automotive industry has learned in recent years. An obsessive focus on the needs and wants of our customers allows us to become an indispensable part of their lives, but nothing is forever. Continuous improvement is expected in virtually every industry, and quality is the minimum requirement in today’s global economy. Leaders are those who significantly outperform the competition in every aspect of the business.
• There are three words you must learn to build and maintain relationships. Learn these words, and most of all, work with your customers, employees, family and friends to master these words: Attitude - Communication – Tolerance.
• The gateway to success is through your customers, your staff and you … It all comes down to relationships and relationships are based on mutual respect, trust, loyalty, understanding, compassion, and more of which that cannot be purchased – they must be earned.
• The first responsibility of the CEO/President and management for any company is to protect, enhance and grow the brand.
